What
is the 48 Hour Film Challenge ?
It's an event where you get a chance of stop talking about making a film
and really get off your arse and go make a film!
The Challenge to make a 3 min horror film in just 48hrs from a random theme and title & prop picked by your team leader at the start of the event
you have to turn up to the MOVIEUM IN THE OLD COUNTY HALL CINEMA 25th OCT 10am with at least one of your team members or crew , your team must register via the website by downloading an entry form beforehand , complete the entry form and return it to us with your entry fee ,
your team will then be called out one at a time , your team leader must then pick a random theme and a title & prop which you must then register with one of our staff ,
You then have the next 48 hrs to complete ashort 3 min horror film,
in Guerrilla film making style "whatever it takes ", no rules, just film it and run like hell !!.
your team must write shoot edit plus teams name theme and title must be at the start of the film or the teams credits at the end all within the 3mins ! return the film to us on mini dv format only
but not on no dvds please !!

Teams must then return their completed films to the venue from which they collected their theme and title . All creativity-writing, shooting, editing and adding of a musical soundtrack-must occur in just a 48 hour window beginning on MONDAY 27th Oct between 10:00am - 11:00am deadline TO THE MOVIEUM BOX OFFICE

you will be able to drop off your tapes at the Movieum box office before if you wish dropping it off to security or by posting it in the Movieum letterbox,please note you MUST put your teams theme and title on the tape & TEAM NAME and a contact no. incase anything is wrong with your tape (INC BAD LIGHTING OR DROP OUT ) we want your films to look stunning as if they were are own .
The screening of the completed films within the event will be screened on the 31st Oct from 8PM onwards
and every film made will be screened @ THE MOVIEUM'S GOTHIC COUNTY HALL CINEMA
We have also produced a DVD with the best films from the 1ST Halloween 48hr Film Challenge 2005 held at the Imax cinema in Waterloo , if you wish to buy one of them please let us know in advance so we can make you a copy , they cost only 4.99 and all proceeds go towards making this years dvd for all the teams who take part

What are the films about? HORROR !
Each team will be given two genres for their 3 min short film both themes
on Horror eg comedy horror , thriller horror, etc etc at the draw before
the start of the competition?. In the past, genres have included: mockumentary,
comedy, romance, mystery, Acton thriller , kung fu , Drama and spoof to
name a few. In addition, all teams are given one title for their film
, which they must use in their film which can not be changed
Who sees the films?
Films have been screened in festivals all over the world from our events
in the past - some have even won major festivals. Of course the filmmakers,
actors, family and friends are there to support their premier of their
weekend's work. But its also something you have completed and made , hopefully
it will get you seen and hopefully inspire you to go on and make even
more and more!

Everyone wants to see what everyone has done and you learn from each other.
The event has a creative energy only filmmakers can understand. Winners
of the event are distributed on a "BEST OF FILM CHALLENGE” DVD.
In 2004, the winning films are screened on the channel 4 WEBSITE, UKscreen
and screened in 2005 Raindance Film Festival in London plus
loads more…We have been offered a slot on sky tv to screen the films and a student cable network in the USA which will also screen all the films to over 20,000 students
Who are the filmmakers?
The 48 Hour film challenge is open to all filmmakers, pro, novice &
first timers in DIGITAL FORMAT. Rules state that all team members (crew
and cast) must be volunteers; actors need to give their consent in writing
to the director before they start shooting. Most teams have in the past
consisted of filmmaking professionals and teams who have done these events
before which is great for 1st timers as they meet them and can ask them
questions they would never have been able to ask before. We have attracted
some real talent on both sides of the camera over the years. One film
won best short at the London Film Festival 2004 and 2003 winners from
the 48hr event are featured on the CHANNEL 4 WEBSITE plus paul wiffern won best film in this years cannes 24hr film challenge which i supported this year we are in cannes in 2009 with cannes in a van team so we are looking to screen the best there next year !!
How long are the films?
The films must be a min max 3minutes long which including titles and credits.
Note: no shorter than last year. (Tighten up those films, and editors
- cut in camera to save yourself time, improvise and be HARD about rushes
.
Where and when are they shown?
we will select a panel of 2 film makers from the independent film club who have taken part in the events
before ,They select all the films which we will then put on
to a dvd for every team to have one per team.
There is
no guarantee their will be any standing-room for excited crews and friends
wanting to attend the films like last year where we filled out ever single
screening back to back . Additional screenings will be scheduled
What cities has the 48 Hour Film challenge visited?
The project began in the curzon cinema in london , in 2002, and last year
we visited 4 major cities LONDON - MANCHESTER - BRISTOL- EDINBURGH. This
year, we've added more cities including one of our first European event
held in BERLIN in may 2004 it visited BULGARIA End of SEPT 2004 then went
on to PARIS end of OCT 2004 it was held then held at the 2005's CANNES
FILM FESTIVAL in the British pavilion ,
How is the event advertised?
By word and mouth at 1st we keep it secret to only hardcore film makers
at 1st we make it low key so only the underground film makers find out
about it at 1st !, Then event is advertised over the Internet and through
press releases to film networks and forums plus film schools ,colleges,Universities,
film clubs, It has loads of industry film makers who come on board to
have some fun each year and help others on their films , online filmmaking
networks like shooting people mandy.com talent circle UKscreen etc and
many more underground networks helping to spread the guerrilla film makers
word. In every city, the 24 Hour Film challenge generated interest from
local and national media networks inc tv and film . The results: streamed
on the channel 4 WEBSITE and The U network on sky TV , Too articles in
the Guardian, Scottish Times , showreel Magazine,camcorder magazine and
film maker magazine in the USA as well as stories in local newspapers
and at the launch party held at the American pavilion at the Cannes film
festival 2004 .
The films
will be released in festivals all over the UK to promote the film makers
(so make sure you have your email or WEBSITE details in your credits !,
Plus we will be putting a dvd together for each team to have a copy ,
the winning three films will be streamed on the Halloween 48 hour film challenge WEBSITE
What are the Prizes?

Min req= 1: A DVCAM style camera or one of the new HDV Cameras available
(must be mini dv format size tapes only )- 2: A Computer apple Mac or
a powerful PC - 3: Editing software i.e

IMPORTANT NOTE FOR PUTTING YOUR FILM BACK TO TAPE MAKE SURE YOUR SETTINGS ARE DV BASIC NOT DVPRO TEST IT OUT BEFORE THE EVENT !!
Ratio for screening 4.3 letterbox is cool
Please hand Your Finished film back to us for screening on DVCAM tape
OR HD-V FORMAT (Mini dv size tapes only) NO LARGE SIZE DVCAM TAPES OR
DVDS PLEASE FORMAT MUST BE PAL NOT NTSC OR 24P , why cos we can edit them together for screening in the cinema ,Your
films must include ,The film MUST be completely edited with your own music
or un/ copyrighted music , teams must include the Teams name and film
title and themes given to them at the start of their film and you must
have credits of your cast n crew and teams emails address or website details
on the end of the film all within 3mins !
Films must be handed in on Mini dv size HD video tapes and DVCAM tapes
only
NO dvds vhs betacam umatic hi8 Super 16mm 35mm Prints? or super 8 please
! THIS IS A DIGITAL ONLY EVENT SORRY
we can not edit them together for the screenings IF THEY ARE NOT ON MINI
DV SIZE TAPES we can cant screen them !
Important info for teams who pull out of the event :
We can not refund any cheques or paypal payments if you cancel taking part in the challenge or can't find a team to help you , have a small team which inc a camera man director boom op and a few actors and that's it , small crew's save you time and expensed don't use family members they never take directions bribe beg steel to get your film made pull in all your favor's and then pull even more ,You will still receive a dvd of all the films made in this years event plus you are invited to attend the screening on the 31ST Oct at the MOVIEUM Cinema plus you are also invited to the FANCY DRESS SCREENING part in the Movieum cinema on FRIDAY OCT 31ST FROM 8PM . We are sorry if you can't get things together for the event BUT NEVER GIVE UP once you have registered your entry form payment is non refundable sorry as funds go towards the running of the event (the events are non profit making events we do it for fun !!.
